I will try and sum it up.
#1- check.
#2- Thank you, but the more I do this the more I realize I know NADA lol.
#3- No, there are not several tables. There is usally around 4 interpreters and 12 or so guests all around one big table.
#4- We do try and stick to current events, both in our own personal lives and what is going on in the news at the time. However, I always have to answer questions. Some of these visitors ask things like "How long does it take you to get to church?" To find this, first I have to pick where I attend. I am portraying a Universalist, who attended the First Universalist Church of Akron until it broke up in 1853, and didn't reform until the 1870's. As of right now I am trying to see if there was another option for me in 1861 or if I am just not currently atteneding. As for when I was, I had to locate exactly where it was, and determine the milage (10). Now I have to figure out would I be able to get there by train (check rail lines for that date), if so, whats the cost of passage? How long of a trip? (Find train schedules) If by carriage, how long would that trip take? Etc etc. etc. I know it seems like I'm going overboard, but that's how these suppers go. We have returning visitors every year, some who like to trip us up in front of other guests. Not fun. As a side note, the church I would have atteneded was the site of a women's rights convention in 1851, where Sorjourner Truth gave her "Aint I A Woman? speech. I would have been 18 at the time, and am considering talking about it like I was a live witness. More research required...Mrs. Flatteryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03461192491117842075noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3759869925907998476.post-49408410114165326322011-03-23T17:55:16.373-07:002011-03-23T17:55:16.373-07:00Mrs. Flattery,
You wrote: "I've always s...Mrs. Flattery,
You wrote: "I've always said doing first person requires you to have a lifetime of memories to draw from that don't actually exist, and one must be able to do so at a moment's notice."

Now, this is true, especially at a three hour supper. But, a few things to remember...

1) Be yourself - your own personality. Not some textbook-type Victorian woman, but yourself.
2) I've read your postings (and more) for a while now - - - - you know your stuff! Give yourself a bit more credit than you do!
3) Remember, even at a three hour meal, you will not be speaking for three hours. And, I'm assuming that you will not be speaking to the entire group at once, but at individual tables, so many stories can be re-told.
4) When at the farm and not at the suppers just speak on current (Civil War era) events. I mean, how often do you speak of the past 30 years in your modern life? That would be the same in 1863, would it not? You probably would not be talking to people about 1857 if it's 1863. Stick with your era.

I hope this helped you. I envy your occupation - you are living what many of us dream about.
Good luck!!Historical Kenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04979801752112100293noreply@blogger.com
